Recently open in the Hazelton Lanes mall in Yorkville, Whole Foods Market is, like Pusateri's, a cross between a supermarket and a fine food store. They have all kinds of goodies for sales, and also make some of their own. In the pastries display are presented many cakes from Dufflet, Altitude Bakery, and several other providers. We found Bakerberry's small apple-cranberry tarts with a thick, almost sponge-cake like crust, very good. In the chocolate display, you will find JS Bonbons, Eitelbach and Rogers chocolates, and also Barry Callebaut couverture chunks. A wide variety of breads (including good-looking baguettes) are baked in house, and complemented with the Ace Bakery line. The coffee is roasted in-house. There is also a large prepared-food area, a large cheese counter (with a good selection of raw milk cheese), and lots of organic fruits and vegetables.
One last word: the staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about the food they sell, so don't hesitate to ask any question -- or ask for a taste of something!

Around early Dec/09 I ventured out to Whole Foods in Oakville, Ontario and when asking the gentleman who maintained the cheese counter if they were going to discount the goat cheese that was expiring the NEXT day, he "shee shee poo pooed" me with an attitude - and that they do not do that and that it was protocal to take EXPIRED cheese and dish it out to patrons as SAMPLES (Yeck - a little stunned, I went to Canadian Super Store - they carry a wide selection of terrific cheeses and got what I wanted and for much less). And I too have noticed that some WF's products are not up to snuff. I asked if their pizza was ORGANIC, and the clerks just shrugged, slices of apple cheesecake taste like freezer burn (or someone's old fridge), I returned on several occasions, bags of produce that suddenly went bad in a few days, what really made the penny drop for me - I don't get why they carry products that list "NATURAL FLAVOR" as one of the ingredients when FOLKS, do your research - that is a cover for "MSG" which is a known toxin (why are they selling these products in a Health Food Store anyway?). On the positive, last time I was there, the two young men at the fish counter were extremely helpfull and the organic salmon turned out awesome, and when you get the right person, they will help you find the right vitamins.

For the folks having some trouble getting information re: salmon: Call at night, and ask for the Seafood Dept. I did that and had the answers I wanted re: wild Alaskan salmon within two minutes. Prices, brands, quantities, etc. I called at 9:15 p.m., usually not a busy time in the store. I am as suspicions of Whole Foods as I am of any large grocery chain, but their customer service has always proven to be true blue in my experience.
