Balthazar restaurant's tiny pastry shop makes a small, but outstanding selection of bakery-style pastries: wholesome, home-style cakes and tarts that may not look like a million dollars, but taste like it! We particularly like the fruit tarts, and among them the apple galette: juicy apples baked in a soft and moist pie crust, without the overly sweet goo commonly found in lesser apple pies. Other rare treats include a canelé, a tiny cake baked so that its crust is slightly caramelized -- delicious!

Balthazar also sells a whole line of French-style crusty breads, including multi-grain, walnut, or potato-onion.

I dream of a "Chauson au Pomme" from Balthazar... even better than *most* of the ones I've had in France... a fabulous flakey butter pastry... and real apple... (not the standard apple-sauce schmoo). yumm!
