Payard
1032 Lexington Avenue Map it!
New York, NY

Payard's pastries are on a par with the very best
in Paris; the large assortment of always-fresh
sweets is sure to delight your palate. Classics,
like the opera (layers of cake, chocolate
and coffee cream), the savarin (sponge cake dipped
in rhum syrup with vanilla custard in the middle),
and any
number of fruit tarts are all there. Payard also
excels in inventive combinations of flavours; the
raspberry-lychee tart, on a shortbread crust
topped with almond biscuit and green-tea/basil
cream, is fantastic. The Chinon, a pistachio
mousse with wild cherries on a chocolate wafer,
should not be missed either.
Many kinds of morning pastries are also on
display; the croissants are simply perfect. The
craquelin, a cross between the French brioche and
the Italian panettone, is also very well done.
The chocolate counter offers over 20 different
kinds of French-style chocolates; most of them
made with a center of flavoured ganache dipped in
a thin layer of dark chocolate couverture.
Payard also has a full-menu, full service
restaurant with fine French cuisine, just behind
the salon de thé.

The place simply combines the best of everything from croissants to pastries, and I like the options of sitting in the nice entrance rotonda for coffee and pastries, the bistro-type restaurant area for brunch or dinner, or simply taking out food - generally I can't help but doing both. It is simply heaven on earth..., to find a place where you can have cake and everything else !
